An defence minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently looking into the possible security risks posed by Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been advised to avoid discussing secret matters in any vehicles.
Safety Advice for MoD Personnel
In a recently aired interview on a radio station, a defence minister commented on reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to talk about classified material while riding in Chinese cars.
The minister stated that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but noted that security is a concern in every modern vehicles.
We have a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a secret level in any car, due to the growing risks of eavesdropping that are present in all automobile, to only have those confidential talks in protected areas. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone worried about safety.
After it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is exactly what we are looking into at the moment.”
Broader Security Context
The announcement comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable China to switch off buses and cause disruption to transport systems.
Additionally, a Russian spy ship was reportedly shining laser beams at RAF aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.
